It’s Alive!

It’s like driving a car that’s served you well for thousands and thousands of miles. It gets you from Point A to Point B – it still looks pretty good, with the exceptions of countless door dings and upholstery stains and tears that only you can see. And with the exception of a rebuilt transmission and the need to add a quart or two of oil every 1,500 miles, you’re still satisfied with it. Sort of. Then one day, you walk out to your car and it hits you like a ton of bricks. It’s time to retire the old steed. And off to the web you go to research a replacement. You agonize over the model, the color, the options and the payments until that magic day when it all comes together and the paperwork is signed at the dealership. Finally, the planets have aligned and you’re ready for another 100,000+ mile journey into the unknown.

It was like that for our website here at Ellsworth Adhesives. It was a good one – perhaps even great. Then one day it hit us. We could do better. And – to paraphrase the voiceover at the beginning Lee Major’s epic TV series, “The Six Million Dollar Man,” “We have the technology – we can rebuild it!” And that’s just what we did. Does our new site possess bionic superpowers? Pretty much. How, you ask? Grab your favorite beverage, pull up a seat and let us explain…

Details, Details, Details!
First of all, when you searched for products on Old Faithful, you could search by Product Categories or Manufacturers. Then you were in the deep end of the pool. The NEW site? NOW you can search by Manufacturers, brands, markets, categories, sub-categories and sub-sub-categories. We kid you not. ‘Looking for tips, needles and nozzles under dispensing equipment? It’s a snap! Looking for a Sylgard 184 0.5kg kit? Instant gratification, my friends! Yeah, it’s that good – but it gets BETTER!

Don’t AgonizeCompare!
How often do you go into a grocery store and pick up one brand, only wondering if you’re getting an OK deal or a GREAT deal? Admit it – you start looking at the labels on the front of the shelves that give you a breakdown of cost per ounce. In the same way, our site does the same thing, except rather than giving you cost per ounce, you can go in and compare product properties SIDE-BY-SIDE. Now THAT’S power. And you don’t even need a coupon!

Glue Doctor University on Steroids!
Old Faithful delivered a page that collected our educational materials on ONE page – we called it Glue Doctor University. Our NEW site? We now deliver educational materials at every level of our site, PLUS links to our YouTube channel AND our podcasts! No need to bounce around from your product browsing, to our Ask The Glue Doctor form, to checkout. If you’re browsing in a specific category and you’re diving down deep to find the perfect solution for your application, there’s a good chance you’ll find educational materials AND literature to review or download WHILE you’re browsing! And the great thing is, with our new site’s (ahem) BIONIC capacity, we’re adding new materials, videos and podcasts EVERY day. You’re welcome.

Relevant Results
This old timer recalls the Good Old Days when teams of diligent interns would flitter away their youth, tirelessly pounding away at their keyboards to feed the Search Beast on Old Faithful. The only downside was that it was MANUAL and labor intensive (Hey – they needed sterling Letters of Recommendation – OK?). Our new site embraces NEW technology that keeps an eye on EVERYTHING that’s added to the site and INDEXES it to provide you with accurate, timely search results. Let’s go back to our aforementioned Sylgard product, shall we? NOW when you enter Sylgard into that nifty little text box at the very top of the page, you get RESULTS, amigo! Here’s a Sylgard search example. On the old site, you’d get an inconsistent list of results (remember those interns?). On THIS site, because of our BIONIC indexing, you get results broken down by Product, Page and Resources, too. Want even MORE results? Click on the “View All” button on the top right of each result box. What do you see? RELEVANT results tailored to YOUR search. Sweet, yes?

Quote Us On That
If you ever submitted a quote to us in the past, you might have found the process to be not as EASY as it could’ve been. Prepare for a paradigm shift, friends. Our new RapidQuote process changes EVERYTHING. Our old site permitted quoting of SINGLE items. The NEW site? It rocks – and here’s why: as you’re moving through our site, researching solutions for your application, you can now add products to your quote simply by hitting the “Add to Quote” button on the right side of the page. Working furiously behind the scenes, our website is automatically building your quote in real time. When you’re finished, all you need to do is hit the “Submit A Quote” button on the top navigation, fill out your contact information, product quantities and you’ve built a quote that you can instantly send to us. We respond quickly with ACCURATE up-to-the-minute pricing and delivery times. How great is that? Yeah – we know.

Can We Make a Recommendation?
If you’re looking at our product pages, you’re going to see something that’s going to make your life CONSIDERABLY easier. Our new site is capable of making recommendations based on the product your viewing. Let’s say, for example, that your looking at Acrylic Adhesives – if you’re looking at the Part A component, don’t forget – you’ll need the Part B, too. And that’s where our site gently suggests items you might need to add that to your order. Far better than ordering one item, having it delivered and then realizing you need to call us for a rush delivery of the Part B component to complete your project. Buying a 250ml two-part adhesive cartridge for your application? Are you SURE you need THAT size? Our site offers OTHER sizes and accessories on ONE PAGE so you won’t have to endlessly surf trying to make the right selection. “Pssst!” our site gently whispers – “don’t forget that pneumatic dispenser!” Our site does it for you AUTOMATICALLY. Think of OUR site as YOUR buddy and insider to the adhesives biz. Yeah – we love you, too!

A Glimpse Into The Crystal Ball
No website can operate in a vacuum. Just because we’ve created a spiffy new website that does FAR more than its predecessor doesn’t mean we’re willing to rest on our laurels. Quite the contrary. As we said earlier, we’re adding products and content at a breakneck pace that leaves our competition in the dust. We want to be YOUR go-to destination on the web when you think of adhesives and specialty chemicals. So let us take the opportunity, right now, to invite you to take our site for a test drive. Check out the depth and breadth of our product selection, request a quote, have a chat with The Glue Doctor, search our site for literature, educational resources or videos or podcasts…heck, buy a product or two! We think you’ll be impressed. However – if you come across ANYTHING that doesn’t meet up to YOUR expectations, PLEASE let us know. We’ll take your suggestions back to the powers that be and do everything we can to incorporate them into our site. You’re that important to us. True story.

The Glue Doctor (and Ellsworth Adhesives go social! Join us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, iTunes or grab our new newsletter, e|Net!If we had a nickel for every time someone asked us if we had a page on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, all of us here at Ellsworth would be able to retire tomorrow. Sure, we got bold and set up this blog and went one step further and posted podcasts on a variety of adhesive-related technology. But going Social??? Heck – it scared the glue right out of us! How would our customers respond? What would we do for content? Who’d post what? Would our Facebook Fans OD on adhesive posts? Who REALLY knew? Now remember – Ellsworth began as a family-run business in a garage. It still is…minus the garage. We’re now known worldwide, with offices all over the US, Canada, Europe, China, South America and Mexico. We didn’t get as large as we are by throwing caution to the wind. We take our time and do things RIGHT.

So…it is with the greatest of pride and a slight bit of trepidation that we announce our foray into the “Great Unknown.” The world of online social media. Why’d we do it? ‘Glad you asked! We wanted more immediate ways to communicate with you, our valued customers. We wanted to keep you up to date on EVERYTHING that goes on here in Germantown, Wisconsin and at our global locations. Thanks for joining us on the journey!

P.S. Have you ever looked at a web page and thought to yourself, “Hmm…I wonder what this website would sound like if the page’s source code could be converted into music?” Neither have we, but every once in awhile, you come across a site so interesting, you can’t help but think to yourself, “who comes UP this stuff?” Such is the case with Code Organ. All you have to do is type in – and you’ll get the idea. Personally, I think our website sounds like a marriage of Latin Rhumba and a spy theme. Truth be told, you can enter any URL – it’s just that ours sounds so COOL. Have fun!

Tin Whiskers – Not the Name of a New Heavy Metal Band

Tin Whiskers - The phenomenon caused by the migration of tiny shards of lead-free solder that occurs when a circuit powers up, causing circuit failure.

Tin Whiskers. The name of a new heavy metal band? The name of a feline superhero created by the fertile imaginations at Marvel Comics? A new line of jewelry for your domestic Tabby? Wrong again, my friends.

Briefly, the phenomenon of tin whiskers is a problem caused by tiny shards of lead-free solder migrating to other exposed parts of a printed circuit board once the circuit is powered up. Electromagnetic voodoo is what it is. ESPECIALLY bad in circuits involving missile guidance systems, the communications system of the next flight you take cross country or automotive safety. For example, it’s been noted in this article that this phenomenon could be responsible for the recent Toyota recalls. You’re getting the idea now, right?

If you have anything to do with the design or assembly of printed circuits, you owe it to yourself to toddle on over to Ellsworth and grab our free Multicore whitepaper detailing this phenomenon and how to mitigate it. Grab your copy here.

Here Comes A New Decade!

No big surprise that the last year is one we’re glad to leave behind. All of us faced unprecedented challenges that we thought we’d never see in our lifetimes. Here at Ellsworth we’d like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to all of our customers who placed their trust in us in 2009 to deliver the goods to keep their businesses moving, who trusted our Technical Support personnel for the right solutions and who were responsible for helping us set records for traffic on our website. You are…without qualification…the best customers anyone could ask for.

We know we’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re confident that things will turn around for us and for you, too. As we’ve learned here at Ellsworth, the best thing to do when the going gets rough is to face the wind and keep pushing on…even taking a risk here and there. That’s our game plan for 2010. What’s yours?

By the way, our Marketing department is unleashing a slew of newsletters, all under the name of E | Net Newsletters - unique and insight full industry news tidbits for the Industrial, Electronic and Medical Device assembly industries. No fat – pure content. If you’re interested in grabbing a copy. Stop over at our site and signup.

Again, thanks to all of you for your continued trust and business. Now let’s get back to work!

A Trifecta of New Podcasts

It started out in a cube last year about this time. The usual Monday morning rehash review of website maintenance, strategies, metrics reviews…yawn. In an uncharacteristic burst of synapses (undoubtedly fueled by three Venti quad-shot lattes), the Webmaster mumbles something about adding podcasts about adhesives to the Ellsworth website. Marketing Manager mumbles something back about trying it to see what happens.

Fast forward to August, 2008. Over 1,300 (and growing every day) iTunes subscribers download Ellsworth “Ask The Glue Doctor” podcasts – an unprecedented achievement in the adhesives industry and a milestone in making the Ellsworth website the best it can be for our customers. Bite-sized, take-it-anywhere, content-rich educational content? For free? You betcha!

So…with no expense spared, we decided to give you, esteemed listeners, MORE podcasts! What kind of program topics, you’re wondering? Read on…

  1. When it comes to talking about hot melt adhesives, you couldn’t find a more knowledgeable guy than Glue Factory VP of Sales and Marketing, Bruce Church. In this twelve-and-a-half minute episode, Bruce talks about hot melt adhesive technology for the packaging industry. Great information for anyone involved in hot melt adhesive applications. Check it out!
  2. Being the potentate of adhesive and specialty chemical distribution means that we have to offer our customers a selection of product with the industry’s greatest depth and breadth to satisfy ALL adhesive applications. That means offering products from companies like Dow Corning. Naturally, Dow Corning is staffed with Ninja-level experts in adhesives. We were lucky to capture one such conversation with Director of Global Marketing, Electronics Division, David Hirschi about thermal bonding and adhesive applications. Listen and learn!
  3. Here’s what happens when one of our listeners takes a minute out of his or her day to send in a question or topic suggestion to Ellsworth – we use it! In this case, faithful listener Dean Cuadra of San Diego, California, who works in the electronics industry, wanted to know more about oxygen Inhibition. We grabbed our new Chief Marketing Officer, Jeff Payne and picked his brain about this phenomenon. Jeff has been in the adhesives industry forever. To say he’s a walking textbook on all things adhesive might be an understatement. This podcast gives you seven minutes and three seconds of Jeff’s insight into oxygen inhibition. Don’t miss it!

And don’t forget – when you have a question about adhesive applications, or want to suggest a topic for our next series of podcasts, just drop us a line. If we use your question or suggested topic, not only do you get the cool Glue Doc bobblehead (see the entry below, “Could Anything Be Cooler?”), but you’ll also get a mention on the program. Just ask Dean Cuadra…you think fame and fortune, instantly thrust upon you, is an easy thing to deal with? Don’t YOU want to know? Sure you do.

Of course, we realize that sometimes you just HAVE to an answer NOW. Dear readers, I would be errant in my ways if I failed to mention our ultra-cool “Ask The Glue Doctor” live chat. Our Applications Experts, sitting at their computers in a Zen-like state, drawing from the industy’s deepest well of adhesive knowledge, serenely tapping their keyboards with responses to your questions. Don’t feel social? No problem. Just fire off information about YOUR adhesive application dilemma into our Glue Doctor Application Analysis form and we’ll get a solution back to you post haste! Don’t stress over those unanswered adhesive applications questions…the Glue Doctor is here to make YOUR life serene!

Enjoy the new podcasts, y’all! Thanks for making our program a great success. It’s your support that makes us the uncontested leaders in the adhesive and specialty chemical industry. Can you feel the love? We hope so!
